🌿 Independent Living

(55+ Communities)

Freedom, Comfort, and Community Without the Upkeep

These communities are not licensed to provide medical or personal care, but many offer optional safety features such as emergency call pendants or pull cords for peace of mind.
If assistance is ever needed, staff or managers must contact emergency services (911), as they cannot perform medical assessments or care directly.

🏡 Amenities and Services

Many Independent Living communities provide:

  • Meal service in a community dining room

  • Weekly housekeeping and maintenance

  • Scheduled activities, fitness classes, and social events

  • Transportation for shopping or appointments

  • On-site amenities such as fitness centers, pools, salons, bistros, and concierge services

💗 Aging in Place with Support

While personal care isn’t included, residents can hire a licensed home-care agency to help with daily needs such as bathing, dressing, or medication reminders.

In fact, many communities now partner with on-site home-care providers, making it easier for residents to age in place longer — while maintaining the independence, freedom, and lifestyle they enjoy.

🌸Pros:

  • Vibrant social atmosphere with abundant activities and opportunities for connection

  • Residents often view themselves as young at heart — even if they use a walker or wheelchair!

  • No home maintenance, yard work, or household upkeep

  • More freedom and time for travel, hobbies, and personal interests

⚠️Cons:

  • No 24-hour care or medical assistance available

  • A second move may be needed as care needs increase

  • Many communities do not accommodate residents with incontinence or those who need reminders or cueing related to memory loss or dementia

💰Typical Costs:

  • Average monthly rent: $3,500-$5500

  • Typically private pay only — Medicaid and long-term-care insurance are not accepted

  • One-time move-in fees generally range from $1,000 – $5,000

  • Most communities offer month-to-month rentals; some may require a buy-in

💡 Note: Independent Living is best suited for those who want to enjoy a maintenance-free, social lifestyle — not for individuals needing daily care or assistance. If you or a loved one now require help with personal care or medication management, another senior-living option may be a better fit.
